A degree attained in the Neuroscience Program qualifies the recipient for a professional career. Both MSc and PhD or MD-PhD candidates fulfill the same requirements during the first segment of this course of study. In the second segment, each group has its own requirements.
The doctoral examination entitles the holder to the international academic degree "Doctor of Philosophy" (Ph.D.) or, alternatively, the German doctoral degree "Doctor of Natural Sciences" (Dr. rer. nat.). Both degrees are considered to be equivalent. The doctoral degrees are awarded by the Mathematics and Natural Science Faculties of the University of Göttingen. Students that have completed Medical School prior to entering the program can receive an MD-PhD degree from the Faculty of Medicine.
The master's degree entitles the holder to the international academic degree "Master of Science" (M.Sc.) and to carry out professional work in the fields of life sciences. The MSc degree qualifies to apply for admission for a doctoral research project at any university or research institution and any profession for which a master's degree is required. The master's degree is awarded by the Biology Faculty of the University of Göttingen. The Biology Faculty regards the master's degree as equivalent to the German "Diplom".
